Recovery House

Sober House Living in one of Asia’s Best Cities

Asia’s Leading Secondary Treatment Facility

The Cabin’s Recovery House in Chiang Mai offers a unique combination of secondary care and tertiary support to clients who have completed primary treatment. It’s an opportunity for clients to apply what they have learned in primary care in the community – safely and with support. This is recognised as an important transitional stage in recovery. Evidence has shown that there are far better treatment outcomes for clients who attend residential aftercare.

Secondary Care

Secondary care at Recovery House is focused on empowering clients to take responsibility and accountability for their recovery, with a phased level of care and a holistic approach. They learn to provide one another with support, while still attending regular group therapy and one-on-one counselling sessions. The length of stay depends on the specific needs of each client but The Cabin recommends a 60-120 day programme for maximum effectiveness and success.

Clients take responsibility for their own recovery by participating in meditation sessions, recovery meetings and completing 12-step work and other assignments. They get involved in service activities, such as teaching English to novice monks and school children and helping at a dog rescue organisation. They can take Thai language lessons, join music, yoga and art classes and participate in physical activities including triathlon training, Muay Thai boxing, wall climbing, cycling, football, golf and team building exercises.

The secondary care programme is designed to prepare clients to re-enter society as responsible citizens while maintaining their new ‘clean’ status in a relatively protected environment, before they head back to the ‘real world’. The weekly programme is a mixture of on-going therapeutic support, voluntary work and social activities:

  • Day care programme 8am-midday.
  • Skills groups – DBT/CBT/ACT.
  • Group therapy.
  • Individual counselling.
  • Family work.
  • 12-step meeting attendance (compulsory).
  • Afternoon activities.
  • Regular drug and alcohol testing.
  • Learning to develop structure and planning.
  • Relapse prevention.
  • Additional therapy addressing behavioural health – trauma, process addictions and relationships.

When clients are ready to leave secondary care, they have a solid foundation on which to base the next stage of their recovery. They’ve developed new interests, new or revived hopes, goals and dreams and learnt how to deal with challenges that can threaten their sobriety.

Tertiary Programme

After having completed at least 60 days in secondary care and displayed social skills and sustained recovery, clients can transition onto The Cabin’s tertiary programme. This phase offers semi-independent living within a safe, supported environment as well as:
  • Purposeful activity training, education and voluntary work.
  • Support coping with triggers and cravings.
  • Structure while learning independence.
  • Support with implementing and making healthy choices.
  • Regular drug and alcohol testing.
  • Family therapy and support.
  • Continuing care planning.
  • Attendance of 12-step meetings (compulsory).
  • Preparation to transit to fully independent living.
  • Individual counselling.
  • Help developing support network.
  • Referrals to local support services.
