Optimal Treatments for Anxiety Disorder
The best treatment for anxiety disorder is highly individualised and should be tailored to each patient’s specific needs. A comprehensive assessment by a healthcare professional is essential to develop an effective treatment plan. This plan may include one or more of the following psychological treatments:
There are a number of different psychological treatments for anxiety, including:
- Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT): CBT is the most widely used and well-researched psychological treatment for anxiety. It focuses on helping you identify and change the negative thoughts and behaviours that contribute to your anxiety.
- Exposure therapy: Exposure therapy involves gradually facing the situations or objects that trigger your anxiety in a safe and controlled environment. This can help you to learn that you can manage your anxiety and that these situations are not as dangerous as you think.
- Interpersonal therapy (IPT): IPT focuses on identifying and resolving interpersonal problems that may be contributing to your anxiety.
- Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT): MBCT is a type of therapy that combines CBT with mindfulness meditation. Mindfulness involves paying attention to the present moment without judgment. MBCT can help you to become more aware of your thoughts and feelings, and to develop more helpful ways of responding to them.
Psychological treatments can be delivered individually or in groups. They are typically delivered over 6-12 weeks but may be longer or shorter depending on your individual needs.
