Once you have made the decision to get treatment for your addiction, you will probably have lot of questions and concerns. This is perfectly normal when deciding to make changes as important and life altering as going into an addiction treatment center.
Whilst many treatment centers operate in very similar ways, you need to carefully consider your situation and needs when deciding the correct approach for your treatment and ongoing recovery. It’s also important to recognize that people may need longer periods of time to successfully complete the different stages of treatment for addiction. Stages of treatment vary, but below you will find some of the most common stages, and information about what they include.
What To expect During Addiction Treatment
- DetoxDepending on the substance you’re addicted to, it may be necessary to medically manage yourwithdrawal. During this stage, you will be monitored and supported by trained medical staff and every reasonable effort will be made to make you comfortable. Symptoms of withdrawal can include: restlessness, insomnia and anxiety. It’s important to recognize that withdrawal can be a difficult and uncomfortable time, but it’san essential part of the recovery process.
- 1-2-1Â therapyYou will meet with your counselor or therapist to explore your personal situation and needs. This can often be a challenge at the beginning of the therapeutic relationship as you adjust to openly discussing problems, and managing your emotions without drugs or alcohol. 1-2-1 therapy is one of the most important and transformative parts of addiction treatment and maybe something you wish to continue when you leave.
- Group therapyDuring group therapy you will meet people with the same addiction problem, and are able to providesupport and encouragement to each another. Group therapy is facilitated by a therapist or counselor who initiates a topic – then facilitates the discussion. Other times, group therapy may include group exercises or excursions away from the center. Different treatment centers have different guidelines around how group therapy is managed – with some being more experimental than others.
- After care planningYou will meet with your support team to decide an after care plan, and help you put together a strategy for how you will manage challenging situations. This may include choosing what meetings you will attend and where, and deciding on your support network/sponsor ahead of time. Planning your after care support is very much a collaborative process – but it’s important to understand that although your team will help you to put together a plan – only you can action it!
