Counselling Therapy

Our Philosophy

We use a hybrid approach which uses the evidence-based psychologically-tested techniques of CBT, but retains the time-tested structure of 12 Step Therapy and the benefits and support of their fellowships and resources.

Group Therapy Inside

Benefits of CBT techniques

  • Uses modern psychological techniques
  • More accessible terminology – traditional AA/12 Step language is alienating a growing number
    of client groups
  • A modern approach is needed to explain addiction in an intelligent way

How and why we use the 12 step framework and fellowship

  • The 12 Steps treatment community supplies a huge international aftercare support network in
almost every location worldwide which pure CBT, Rational Recovery and SMART methods are
    unable to provide.
  • The 12 Step method is a holistic method which was custom built to treat addictions
  • The ‘step’ framework provides a logical structure to help addicts progress module by module
    through to recovery.

At The Cabin we use the following 12 steps which have been amended from the original to produce a non-religious and down-to-earth programme of treatment designed to appeal to clients from any background or faith:

  • Steps 1-2
Examines the history and background of your drink and drug use
  • Step 3
Gives you the chance to commit to a pledge to achieve a healthier new life in your own culturally-appropriate way
  • Step 4-5
You build a behavioral inventory to list your previous damaged relationships and irrational behavior
  • Step 6-7
Gives you the opportunity to list your character defects and build positive new goals
  • Step 8-9
You list people you harmed through your alcohol or drug use and develop a plan to put things right
  • Step 10-12
These are called the ‘Maintenance Steps’ and entail monitoring your progress on an ongoing basis through the use of journals and support groups.

One on One Therapy

You will receive regular One on One Therapy sessions in order to approach those issues which may be difficult to talk about in Group Therapy. It also gives you the chance to identify issues you would like to discuss with the group.

One on One Therapy sessions will always be conducted with your dedicated case manager who will remain with you from the beginning to the end of your treatment.

Group Therapy

We have Group Therapy twice a day 6 days a week, plus evening workshops which are every night of the week.

Group Therapy is utilized in residential rehab because not only your counsellors but also your peer group have a profound effect on your recovery. It’s the main difference between residential treatment and community outpatient treatment/counselling. In a residential setting like rehab, your peer group enable you to see more of your issues than you would otherwise, and the dynamic of working through your issues with others “in the same boat” is proven to be more effective than battling it alone.

Specialist Techniques

At The Cabin we enhance our counselling using specialist psychological techniques:

  • MIND MAPPING TECHNIQUES: is a radiant thinking device developed by neurologist Tony Buzan. It helps us ‘brainstorm’ our thought processes very quickly and easily by using the associative power of color and image with limited writing. Instead of writing a traditional Step 1 life story (as is common in many 12 Step rehabs) we help you to Mind Map your compulsive behavior/substance or alcohol use and the destructive effects it has on life in several areas, including work, relationships and health and share this with the group.

  • POSITIVE AFFIRMATION AND CREATIVE VISUALIZATION: In step 2 and 3 you will turn those problem areas of your life around and set new goals. Again you will use Mind Mapping as the therapeutic technique. This is complemented by our evening workshops which teach Relaxation, Visualization and Mindfulness Techniques as used by the National Health Service in Britain to combat depression and sleeplessness. These non-religious forms of meditation were developed by pioneers like Dr. Richard Fields and John Kabatt-Zinn. Mindfulness increases brain activity and reduces stress. We use it to programme in our new life goals from our Mind Maps through guided meditation resources which teach us how to build and construct mental images. This is known to be the most powerful way to re-direct our cognitive process and thereby change our behavior.

  • ABC: In Step 4 instead of using the traditional 12 Step technique of analyzing our anger and resentment, or anxiety and fears which lead to problematic addictive behavior, we use a CBT technique called ABC to isolate the irrational thought processes behind our addictive behavior. We analyze the Activation Events (A) that led to our resentment in the first place, and how that leads to Irrational Beliefs (B) & Consequences (C) which continue to feed our problematic addictive behavior. Other names you might hear which describe these irrational thought processes are: “Negative Automatic Thoughts”, “Scripts” and ‘Schemas” (Beck et al, 1982).

  • RELAPSE PREVENTION: We use the GORSKI-CENAPS model of Relapse Prevention which looks at the warning signs and general coping strategies that you will employ on return to your community family. It also enables you to regularly monitor irrational as well as rational thoughts and unmanageable feelings.

Relapse Prevention and Aftercare

At the Cabin we are committed to helping you maintain a sober life permanently. You develop a Relapse Prevention Plan in conjunction with your counsellor in preparation for taking part in your own After Care programme.
